Green Food For Beginners

These days the poor little word we all know as not being easy to be, yet it’s the colour of spring and cool and friendly-like plus downright good for you … GREEN … is being used and abused by marketers and PR people galore!  Green “stuff” is supposed to be good for you and the environment but … more often than not it’s all “greenwashing,” just a new way for big companies to sell you the same old junk.

Therefore, I declare that it’s time to take back the GREEN!  The colour that is … We all know we’re supposed to eat green food.  We’re actually supposed to eat a rainbow of food … one of the easiest ways to get all your nutrients.  Simply try to eat a number of different coloured fruits and veggies throughout your day and you’ll get most, if not all, of your recommended daily intakes of those vitamins and minerals folks are always talking about (and often greenwashing in supplements).

The one thing that we can never eat enough of though is that green stuff (oh look … a tangent … There are two things I refuse to include in this particular list of green stuff … iceberg and romaine lettuce.  Those of you that know me might remember my “distaste” for those not really anything but water lettuces.  If you’d like to make a traditional caesar salad … fine but let me tell you there are plenty of much tastier lettuces and greens out there that make a much better and healthier salad!).  So I’m starting the how to eat green stuff page.  Ironically enough (hopefully used right ;) ) I know I’ll also be discussing how to eat green stuff in a green way.  Yup, yea old local, organic, farmers market purchases … which granted at the time of writing (Early Feb. 2011) means cabbage but when it comes to getting enough green food in your diet, sometimes the local portion of the program needs to be stretched a bit (don’t forget, however, sprouts count as green and many local growers (including the jar in your own kitchen) are still growing sprouts).

So here’s the list of posts about Green food …. Enjoy!
